- 고통의 감각과 수행적 실천의 양상들 - 최은미의 『눈으로 만든 사람』을 중심으로 - -
이 논문은 최은미의 소설집 『눈으로 만든 사람』에 수록된 작품을 주디 스 버틀러의 이론을 적용하여 분석한 글이다. 이 작품집에 수록된 최은미 의 소설들은 작중인물의 상처를 반복적으로 들추어냄으로써 이 시대의 차별과 억압에 대해 사유하도록 만들고, 나아가 그것을 깨고 나아갈 수 있는 가능성을 함께 발견해내고 있다. 이러한 최은미의 작품은 다양한 위 치에 놓인 여성이 경험할 수밖에 없는 고통의 감각을 사유한다는 점에서 여성문학으로서 중요한 역할을 할 뿐만 아니라, 현 사회가 지닌 여러 문 제점들을 들여다보는 거울 역할을 한다는 점에서 정치·사회적인 측면에서 도 반드시 논의될 필요가 있다. 본고의 분석 대상인 최은미 소설에 등장하는 인물들은 자신이 경험한 고통의 감각을 토대로 현사회의 폭력에 대항해나가고자 하는데, 이는 체 제 내에서 이루어지는 저항과 전복에 대해 이야기한 버틀러의 수행성과 취약성 이론으로 설명된다. 버틀러는 배제의 메커니즘에 의해 구성적 외 부가 된 존재들의 급진적 인용이 지배 질서를 전복시킬 힘을 갖는다고 주 장했으며, 나아가 우리 모두는 연결되어 있기에 폭력이 아닌 비폭력으로 이 체제에 맞설 필요가 있음을 강조한 학자이다. 즉, 버틀러는 주체의 속 성에서 사회적 관계의 속성으로 논의를 확장시켜나가고 있는 것인데, 본 고는 이러한 사유의 흐름이 최은미의 작품들에서도 발견된다고 보았다. 우선, ｢보내는 이｣, ｢눈으로 만든 사람｣, 그리고 ｢운내｣는 모두 가부장 적 규범에 의해 금기시되는 여성의 몸을 조명함과 동시에 이러한 몸을 지 닌 비순수한 젠더주체로서의 여성이 기존의 규범을 교란시키는 양상을 그려내고 있다. 바로 여기에서 현실을 완전히 벗어나지 않으면서도, 그 사 회의 질서를 충실하게 따르지 않음으로써 체제의 균열을 내는 최은미 소 설의 저항성이 드러난다. 또한, ｢여기 우리 마주｣와 ｢내게 내가 나일 그 때｣라는 두 작품의 경우에는 모두 취약성에 노출된 인물들이 등장하는데, 이 인물들이 타인에게 받은 상처는 완전히 사라지지 않기에 이들은 타인 에 대한 적대와 불신을 안고 살아갈 수밖에 없다. 이때 소설은 누군가와 함께 살아가는 삶이 자신을 끊임없는 폭력에 노출시키지만, 반대로 그러 한 상호의존적 관계를 토대로 비폭력을 실천할 수 있다는 것을 보여줌으 로써 여러 실패 속에서도 다시 일어설 수 있는 가능성을 찾아내고 있다.
A Sense of Pain and the Practice of Performativity
This paper is an analysis of the works included in Choi Eun-mi’s short story collection, “A Person Made from Snow”, applying Judith Butler’s theory. The Stories in this collection repeatedly expose the wounds of the characters, prompting reflection on the discrimination and oppression of this era. Furthermore, they explore the potential to break free from the challenges. Choi Eun-mi’s works play a crucial role in feminist literature by contemplating the sensations of pain inevitable for women in various positions. Additionally, the serve as a mirror reflecting the societal and political aspects of the current issues. The characters in Choi Eun-mi’ novels, the subject of this analysis, strive to resist and confront the violence in contemporary society based on the sensations of pain they have experienced. This can be explained through Butler's theories of performativity and vulnerability, which discuss resistance and upheaval within the system. Butler argued that those who have become structurally excluded through mechanisms of exclusion possess the power to overthrow the dominant order radically. She emphasized the need for non-violent opposition, emphasizing our interconnectedness. In other words, Butler expands the discussion from the attributes of the subject to the attributes of social relationships. The paper observes that this line of reasoning is evident in Choi Eun-mi’s works. The stories “Sender,” “A Person Made from Snow,” and “Odor” all illuminate the female body, forbidden by patriarchal norms, simultaneously disrupting existing norms as impure gender subjects. It is in this disruption that the resistance in Choi Eun-mi’s novels is revealed. In the works “Here We Face” and “At That Time When I Become Myself,” characters exposed to vulnerability emerge. These characters, unable to erase the wounds inflicted by others, carry hostility and distrust, living in a perpetual state of exposure to violence. Despite the novel portraying a life lived with someone exposing oneself to constant violence, it also demonstrates that, through such interdependent relationships, we can practice non-violence, revealing the possibility of rising again despite various failures.
