- 하이테크(High-tech) 자본주의와 대항서사 연구 - 배명훈 소설에 나타난 ‘인공존재’들을 중심으로 - -
본고에서는 배명훈의 소설 중 ‘인공존재’들이 등장하는 작품들을 분석 의 대상으로 삼아, 그의 작품이 ‘하이테크 자본주의(high-tech capitalism)’와 이 에 대한 대항서사를 만들어내고 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 본고에서 사용하 는 ‘하이테크 자본주의’는 현시대의 자본주의를 설명하기 위한 ‘플랫폼 자 본주의’, ‘디지털 자본주의’, ‘인공지능 자본주의’, ‘자동화 자본주의’ 등을 아우르는 개념이자, 인간의 모든 행위와 관계, 정신적 측면까지가 ‘하이테 크놀로지(high-technology)’와 자본주의의 영향 아래 있음을 보여주기 위한 것 이다. 배명훈은 인공존재들의 마음과 정신, 자아와 존엄, 유희와 열반 등 을 중심에 놓고, 자본주의 시스템 안에서 이들을 둘러싸고 발생하는 과잉 생산, 상품화, 공급과 유통, 오작동 등을 엮어 다수의 소설들을 창작하였 다. 그리고 이 과정에서 하이테크놀로지가 궁극에 도달하려고 하는 지점 이자 현재의 기술로는 쉽게 도달할 수 없을 것 같은 지점인 인공존재들의 ‘내면 탐구’와 ‘정신적 고양’ 문제에 천착한다. 이러한 모습을 살피기 위해 배명훈의 소설 속 인공존재들의 정신적 측 면이 고양되는 정도, 다시 말해 이들이 마음을 발견하고, 자아를 찾고, 심연에 들어가는 과정을 순차적으로 따라갈 것이다. 우선 2장에서는 ｢스마 트 D｣(2005)와 ｢변신합체 리바이어던｣(2010)을 중심으로 공유재가 상품이 되고 무한 증식이 가져오는 역설에 대해 살필 것이다. 그리고 3장에서는 가마틀 스타일(2014)과 ｢예비군 로봇｣(2008)을 중심으로 군사용으로 제작 된 로봇이 경로를 이탈하여 자아를 찾아가는 모습과 기계지성이 정신적 혼란을 극복한 후 각성하는 모습을 확인할 것이다. 4장에서는 ｢안녕, 인공 존재!｣(2009)와 ｢수요곡선의 수호자｣(2021)를 통해 고성능 저기능 인공존재 들이 인간처럼 자신의 존엄을 추구하면서 열반에 도달하는 모습에 주목 할 것이다. 마지막으로 이러한 분석을 종합하여 배명훈 소설에 등장하는 인공존재들의 의의를 하이테크 자본주의와 길항하면서 반자본주의적 대 항품행을 (재)생산하는 데에서 찾고자 한다.
Researching High-Tech Capitalism and Counter-Narratives: Focused on the ‘Artificial Beings’ in Bae Myung-hoon’s Fiction
This paper analyzes Bae Myung-hoon’s novels in which ‘artificial beings’ appear. It aims to reveal that his works create a counter-narrative to ‘high-tech capitalism.’ ‘High-tech capitalism’ is a concept that encompasses ‘platform capitalism,’ ‘digital capitalism,’ ‘artificial intelligence capitalism,’ and ‘automation capitalism,’ etc. to describe contemporary capitalism. It also aims to show that all human behavior, relationships, and mental aspects are under the influence of ‘high-technology’ and capitalism. Bae focuses on the mind and spirit of machines, selfhood and dignity, playfulness and nirvana. In his novels, he intertwines the overproduction, commodification, supply and distribution, and malfunctions that occur around products in the capitalist system, and in the process, he tackles the issue of the ‘mind’ and ‘spiritual upliftment’ of artificial beings: the point that high technology is trying to reach, and the point that current technology seems to be unable to reach. To examine this, I follow the artificial beings in Bae’s novel as they go through processes of discovering their minds, finding themselves, and entering the abyss. In section 2, I examine the allegory of capitalism and the minds of artificial beings, focusing on “Smart D” (2005) and “Transformer Leviathan” (2010). In section 3, I focus on “Gamatl Style” (2014) and “Reserve Military Robot” (2008) to see how a military robot deviates from its path and finds itself, and how a machine intelligence awakens after overcoming mental confusion. In section 4, Iwe'll look at “Hello, Artificial Being” (2009) and “Guardians of the Demand Curve” (2021) to see how high-performance, low-functioning artificial beings reach the abyss in their quest for human-like dignity. The final section chapter synthesizes these analyses to find the significance of artificial beings in Bae Myung-hoon’s novels in terms of (re)producing anti-capitalist counter-conducts in opposition to high-tech capitalism.
